Earlier today it was announced that Apple would be giving 12 new MacBook Pros to the 12 most contributing developers of the Webkit community. And once again, Apple has manufactured some good press out of nothing. Webkit, for those who don’t know, is the rendering engine used for, among other things, Safari. It was originally forked from the open source engine KHTML, which Konqueror uses on Linux. Like most open source projects, although there are developers at Apple who work on Webkit to make it better, it’s really the open source community themselves who contribute the most to the project. Most of these developers never really receive any attention for their contributions, but it’s people like these who make a big portion of the computing world go round, and Apple has recognized their commitment to Webkit, rewarding their work with a gift. Apple has not only bought quite a bit of good press with this announcement, but a lot of good will throughout the whole open source community, something that is not as easily bought.
